Let us give just a few examples :
Adobe & Rammed Earth Buildings can take many forms. Above Ground, Very Conventional looking homes, can be made from Adobe or Rammed Earth too . These structures hide their cost & energy savings, in stucco or even wooden clad coverings, & can also have sheet rock applied to the interior walls and ceilings too if needed .

As Architects, we can draw your new structure, As Energy System Designers, we can design your independent power system including water & waste removal systems, As Builders, we can work for you, building the same structure. We don't give out information about our clients & we won't give out your contact info either but we can show you a few building designs we have done in the past. 1 structure , we drew for a client , that has been a popular design was to be a Rammed Earth 4 Story with a underground section.

The Chateaux's of Southern France, have long been a constant inspiration, to many of our clients. Though we did not build this one, it is a fine example of a Rammed Earth structures, that many have asked us to replicate, at least in parts.

Perhaps your desires, are just a Underground building , that is hidden from all but, a select few people. These structures are the "1st house thought" most people have, when "Alternative Shelters" are discussed. Adobe & Rammed Earth can be used for these structures, if a form liner that protects the Earthen Mix, for example a tire, can be put in in place and remains there always. Like blocks stacked 1 upon another the wall rises upwards. There are other methods , including but not limited to Concrete walled structures of course and P.S.P. which stands for "Post / Shoring / Polyethlene", where the walls are of board attached on post, lined with polyethlene & Earth bermed. Here on up to 75 to 90 % of the structure is often underground.

Here is a design, using tires for the forms, providing 3 U's to fashion into a building. This could be multifamily structure, a Single Family or Retail building or Commercial facility. Here, it is simply drawn, with 1 side open , plus the roof which can be partially open, as an alternative entrance.  Other openings can be placed in the walls too so light can fill the rooms. A greenhouse is easy to blend into a underground building too.

The front is all glass, drawn here with 2 examples of water catchment tanks, left & right. Private & public spaces can be added, with partition walls . Partition walls , that are not load bearing, can be made of glass bottles, rocks or soft drink cans , just like bricks with mortar between them ( see photo) . Additions can be later added, with more U shapes and when done right Yes, you can build above the lower levels , when required.

A Simple Shelter Can Also Be Designed and bermed above ground or below, for storm and storage structures. We also know of families that live in structures, just like these and every day, they have almost -$0- dollars in heating & cooling cost & they built their own structure, for under $50.
Yes , you read that right Under $50. Its possible, with salvaged materials , free materials & doing all the work yourself, to do the construction for very little money. Labor is the most expensive part , after the materials and the learning How To. We can teach you the How To part , You can do the labor and if done correctly, YES - you can even pass a code inspection if required.

This is a simplified drawing to give an example & better designs are available for Homes & Commercial structures . The Concrete Dome is another of the strongest designs possible. It is normally made of 3+ inch thick Concrete but , some variation is sometimes required &/or possible. Here are some Concrete Dome shapes , to choose from:

All these designs are Thermal Mass Structures . Remember, the mass inside, evens out the Temperature changes, so the swings are not very rapid. If your underground, the average Temps are about 58 degrees so, you only have to heat up the building, about 20 degrees, to be very comfortable. In the Summer heat, you don't have to cool it very much either. In certain parts of the world, for example the Southeastern USA, air conditioning is almost a requirement of life and even in a underground building - it is needed on the hottest days. But, it won't have to run very much at all and the equipment sizes, are greatly reduced, due to the Thermal Mass Walls & Floors slowly changing Temperature .

Log Homes, can made from short 2 foot long logs, forming Cord-Wood or Fire-Wood buildings.  At a distance , this style looks very much like a Rock wall. Interior walls can be built with this method as well as the exterior walls too.

Cans, Bottles & Other semi solid materials like PET plastic bottles, can also be used to build interior walls. The tire walls, also require something to go, between the tires to fill the gaps . Cans for example, can be quickly mortared in place,  so the whole wall, can be mortared smoothly. The entire interior partition walls of a structure, can be crafted of cans or bottles but, normally a single can wall, is not strong enough, to hold up weight loads .

We have only touched upon some of the possibilities out there, having left out several other fine choices including but not limited to: Papercrete , Ferrocement, Sea Container Conversions, Earth Or Sand Bag Construction & many more, all depending upon what is needed in your case. Starting torque is < 1/10 the full load torque.

Example:

Best way to determine what Horse Power engine that will be required,
for a diesel 1800 rpm engine is , to take the wattage rating of the generator and
divide that by 700

Finding A Place To Build In Counties with Few or No Building Codes

We get calls from companies & individuals alike, both looking to buy inexpensive land where they can build their new self sustainable building. Unfortunately, most places have building codes that are overly restrictive and make it difficult to build with alternative materials such as Rammed Earth , Adobe Blocks , Concrete Domes, etc or even to be off grid without any public utilities. But within some states in North America, we still have counties that don't require building permits nor building inspections what so ever. While these locations are not in downtown areas and are typically in more remote, rural areas, they are normally within the modern driving range of most metropolitan areas so , the job you may still have or wish to get , can still be gotten to.

A few locations currently do have building codes, that include Adobe & Rammed Earth Construction & You Can Find A Copy Of Those Codes, At Our Georgia Adobe Yahoo Group Links Page. See The Contact Us Section Above , For A Link To The Groups. You may be able to use this existing code as part of your argument to allow your use as well in your area. Also ASTM has just released a study of required mixtures to get to a load bearing strength for Earthen Construction mixes. They charge about $38 for their report and you must purchase this, from ASTM directly. Search For: ASTM Earthen Construction Minimum Standards 2010.

While responding to live, phone & email inquiries about this subject, we realized pretty quickly that it wouldn’t be very difficult to locate and perhaps map the lenient areas of the entire nation, if several volunteers worked together. One possibility is for each volunteer to take telephone the county offices in their state or a portion there of, contacting the regional building authorities and then report their findings so that info can be posted for all to use.

Most counties in this age have some kind of web site of their own and or certainly some phone numbers listed through the internet directories . Also checking through the States main web site will often give you details about contact info & persons at the county level. Highly developed counties would be a waste of volunteers time to call; for Example the City Govt. Of Atlanta GA. is about as worthless to ask a question of as calling the US federal government for advice - forget them & plan on building elsewhere. Some counties may also post their building codes or requirements online at their county web site.

What do you ask ? Sometimes you will get a No Building Permits Required But, Septic Tanks Permits & Percolation Test Are Required By State Government And That There Are Guidelines for all structures built in size ( X ) or some sq. footage amount or the # of bathrooms or bedrooms that can go on a certain size lot, as their answer. When & If So, take down that info also.

Grading & Clearing Inspections ?

Foundation & Footings Inspections ?

Is there a plumbing Inspection ?

Is there a Wiring Inspection ?

What are their policies on building Underground Structures ?

Is Building with Masonry Mixes, Such As Rammed Earth Permitted ?

Is Building With Solid Masonry Adobe Blocks, Permitted ?

Is Building a Concrete Dome Permitted ?

Ask if a set of plans is required, to be submitted before building & what depth of drawings & To Which Depts. ?

Ask if a State Licensed Engineer’s Stamped plan is required to build All Structures ?

Ask, What’s the minimum house size allowed by code To Be Permitted ?

Ask, Who reports your construction to other government agencies Within The County, such as Property Tax Dept. ?

Now don't be discouraged if they answer all yes's, that there is a permit & inspection required for everything , as they may allow Experimental Construction and Non Dwelling Structures Such As Barn construction Or Storage Buildings Made From alternative materials. When this is so, you might build " A Barn " , turn on the power & wave goodbye to the Friendly Ole Inspector. Then Add On After They Leave ! Also, as Government Employee Types always like their Ego stroked, a ground breaking that is photographed By The News Paper, of a New Experimental Process, that they would get to take credit for bringing to the good people of your county , might also get you the permits you need . Never take no as the final answer, as tomorrow that person may drop dead , get promoted to garbage collector or who knows someday , you might be able to make them an offer , they couldn't refuse !

You & your family can be the test pilots for the experimental structure, for say about, a 50 year research project & your new "Bio-Building " (TM) can be well tested then.

As non invasive counties are found & can be promoted whom are open to alternative structures, you might also ask them if they know of other counties with similar policies ?

Adobe is a Earthen material block. Adobe Construction is said to be mans 2nd oldest profession. Some say, Gods Greatest Gift To Man, was the Earth as without it , we would be a drift at best. We agree with that and thinks also , with this wonderful material, we can design & build a new building for your business or large residential needs.

As that our company normally only works for Commercial clients or for larger

residential projects we offer the below Free information to those of you

interested in hiring us to design & build for you and also for those persons

doing it yourself, to build a average size, family home. Personally, We don't

think you can find a better material to choose than Earth to build with !

Adobe blocks are strong, can be designed to have openings

within them to pour with cement and rebar when needed , they are as light weight

as common cement blocks & they are portable. With the knowledge of a skilled

professional mason, the floors , the walls, the fireplace and the Roof can be

made from adobe blocks and the same earthen mixes , can provide a stucco

coating inside & out and the very mortar mix binding the blocks together,

achieving a high degree of sustainability.

The ease of construction starts with simple materials sometimes right under your

feet. Sand, Clay and some finely chopped Straw. at a 70% sand 29.5% clay and .5%

chopped straw mix one will find the traditional basic mixture, to build a block

with. The straw adds to the quality to the mix, in that it helps hold the block

together, in a non-fired block and in a fired block , one get little chimneys to

develop as heat within the block, flows where straw burns out . This makes the

block stronger or less likely to crack.

The clay acts like Portland Cement does, in that it is microscopically , a plate

like substance, that binds the Sand together, in a lightly compacted earthen

mix. The clay can be replaced in part with Portland, if one wishes a water resistant block & a

5% to 6% replacement, is what one sees in use. Hydrated Lime can also be used

but, the lime is normally required at twice the quantity, of Portland Cement.

The Block form is only designed to be temporally used to define the blocks size

and it is 4 sided, thus keeping the width & length constant while allowing the

removal & reuse of the same form to make additional blocks, in a semi continuous

manner . The form makes l block at a time and you will need many blocks to

construct a building with. The drying time varies with the weather and water

content you start with but 30 days in warm - dry weather is a common time frame

to have finished blocks.

4 inches thick 8 x 16 or 12 x 12 & some 12 x 16 inch blocks are common. To

fabricate holes just add a spacer where desired, One then lays the blocks with

or without mortar , sometimes placing the small ends running outside to inside ,

to give a thicker wall. Always keep your earthen blocks off the ground with a

stem wall of at least 6 inches , pour solid cement headers & place them or use

wooden beams with mortar to set them as well. Leave some nail blocks embedded ,

where you want to add wood work to the walls and at the top of your wall you

will want a solid concrete bond beam tying all together. For the roof made with

blocks see the drawing we include in the photos section as it details the old

world practice of arch roof construction.

Rammed Earth

This a part of our do it yourself series articles for those whom need a home but, can't afford hire anyone to build for them. It will also explain the process to those who would be interested in receiving assistance with their project. Georgia Adobe prefers to work on Commercial or Large Residential projects and give away the knowledge to those who wish to learn when possible.

What Is The Way We Think Most Walls Should Be Built ?
2 Words :

RAMMED EARTH !

This is by far the best process for developing any earthen constructed structure. Why you may ask ? Because we believe , it is the most solid and if done our way hardly any code out there will turn down this design of building as it mimics the standard concrete construction already in place today.

If You Want A Modern Structure Built With Ancient Materials While Building Economically AND Without Debt : THIS IS IT:
Rammed Earth.

We are building with a natural concrete a product called Rammed Earth. It has many use possibilities but the easiest to understand is the post and beam design.

Think of this method as the post and beam construction process we all learned about in wood construction but, without the standard wooden post and or beams - And built with materials that would perhaps outlast wood.

For the smoothest looking walls without too many form lift marks, brought about by moving up your forms, the entire wall section is to be formed all at once. The Earthcrete (TM) is packed all the way to the top in 3 to 6 inch lifts & then the forms are used over again on the next section.

Tamping with long poles , weighted by heavy ends attached into tall frames ( as high as the wall ) , using a bit less intensive compaction , than short framed work will achieve, a more seamless appearance when finished, as you add more Earth to your forms.
It must be firm but each layer added, adds to that firmness as you work. The thickness of the wall is determined by the loads that will be placed upon that wall. We normally install 24 inch thick walls for single story structures and a structural engineer always makes the call of what is required as sometimes less thickness is all that is needed. The mixture of Earth added to your wall, will help them make this call .

A key way, is formed in the 2 end sections of the wall forms, by the addition of perhaps a 6" board standing from bottom to top, at each end. This ties the two wall sections together later, as a concrete or Earthcrete (TM) post is poured in place, between the 2 finished Rammed Earth walls . This post then ties & connects all sections , to the very top bond beam , of concrete steel or wood. This is where the older wooden post and beam is alike the Rammed Earth post & beam method. It ties the wall sections together with the roof in a method that is a age old proven method. New Mexico for example, has in their building codes as section on Earthen construction specifying vertical support at 25 foot increments. This might be a tee wall or a buttress intersection or simply the end of the wall at a right angle.

E=MC2 Remember that one ? Greater Mass means Greater Strength And Greter Thermal Mass Too !

Concrete makes the strongest walls & concrete post , as your vertical structural element is still finished as a Rammed Earth wall would be. One might also add color to the concrete mix during the pour or afterwards. Thermal mass is still the end result and the flywheel effect of temperature control is still received . Wooden post set in the ground and tied into the earth walls could also be in keeping with older historical methods of additional stabilization but, that predates concrete and though wooden post have lasted a long time they might fall victim to the ravages of Pest or Rot over Time therefore we like concrete post best.

Have you ever thought what did they do with the big Red Brick Building in downtown, that they tore down ? You might be surprised to learn it made its way to a land fill ! Sometimes it becomes fill dirt additions to a hole but most often its treated like garbage. Some materials have hazardous contents like asbestos fibers ( even Old Concrete did ) but many times you can salvage several buildings from 1 large one if care is taken to remove them.

There is always the County Dump to choose From. Yes, you read that right ! The Dump. That building that went by truck may have landed there and so too will other materials like washing machines. Metal can be salvaged and cut into roofing from large flat appliances and this is just 1 thing people throw away.

Ever Consider Plastic Water Bottles ? Glass Bottles, Cans Jars, Broken Tile and the list goes on. So many items can be reuesd if the design is solid and your new building may not cost so much after all. Consider These Few Eaxmples:

Can Walls Are strong but in load bearing use they must be doubled and have a center of concrete designed to be of a proper strength. When a can wall is built it could also be plastered over as a stucco wall is.

Log Homes Are an attractive wall and can be formed of long logs or shorter ones. The shorter logs are often called "Cordwood Walls" as they look like firewood as they are normally 24" long , completely debarked, and as dry as possible.

Tires make for a great combination of forms that will stay in place and natural Earthen Materials to fill them. Slicing the tire makes filling easier to fill and the work is fairly lite weight as an empty tire is all that is set in place & a bucket of soil to compact into it is easy to raise.

Simple "U" shapes are found all over the Nature , as that round is stronger. This is the reason eggs are shaped like they are and the earth is a spherical structure. It hold together very well; 1 side holds the next. We design structures with Natural Curves to have the greatest strength but , some straight walls are found in our designs too. It sometimes takes twice the materials thickness, to build straight walls, as it does round.

Portable Structures:

When building a portable structure some might think of pitching a tent but, a Yurt is a better portable structure , that may give stronger and longer structure life. These are built in the same style as history teaches us the Mongouls built round Tent like Yurts with wooden braces and Animal skins. Today , better materials than skins can be found but, wooden supports still give you a portable structure that can come apart in 1/10 the time it takes to assemble it.

As drawn above you could even build of Thin shell plywoods and assemble or trailer the completed unit from point to point. There are ways to line the inside of a Yurt with insulation by constructing and or even sewing a pocket into the fabric walls and inserting a cellulose packet into the liner And floors can be built up and plastic lined to keep them dry and insulated too.
